The political analyst who has been taking steps to change the rules on Viagra, has been found guilty of buying and selling prescription drugs in Britain.
Simon Healy, the chief executive of the Pharmaceutical Association, admitted selling and using Viagra and its generic versions to treat erectile dysfunction. The company also paid between £2.5m and £4.5m for the products.
In a statement, Mr Healy said: “We have suffered a number of serious health complications in recent years and the problem is not new. The vast majority of men do not suffer any side effects.”
He said: “We are very disappointed that the government has decided to restrict the sale of Viagra and other medicines and has decided to impose a maximum fine of up to £500m on some of its drugs.”
In March, Mr Healy had pleaded guilty in the United Kingdom to two counts of buying and selling prescription drugs under the trade mark Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
He said he was “very disappointed” that the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency was still considering whether to proceed with its review and recommended the company stop selling the products.
Mr Healy added: “It is important to remember that the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is responsible for the safety and quality of all medicines.”
A spokesman for the pharmaceutical group said: “The MHRA is one of the world’s leading bodies of medicines and in the UK, around 70 per cent of the products sold to consumers are medicines that contain the active ingredients Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and Stendra.”
Mr Healy, who is also a professor of medicine at University College London and the chair of the Medical Ethics Committee of the MHRA, said the regulatory authority was aware of the problem and acted accordingly.
In December, the government announced that it would fund the research programme to investigate the possible health risks associated with Viagra.
The pharmaceutical company said its research into Viagra had found no link to erectile dysfunction. It also said it was conducting clinical trials to test the drug’s effects.
It is believed to have found that the tablets, manufactured by Pfizer Inc, contain a substance known as sildenafil. It has since been removed from the market and will be removed from the market in March.
In February, the MHRA announced it was investigating the use of Viagra in the UK. Viagra is a prescription medication that contains sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
Viagra is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for more than a decade and has been prescribed to millions of men around the world.

“Our analysis of the data will be a useful tool for clinicians and for patients and their families,” the MHRA said.

“So it’s important to talk to your doctor about this.”
The MHRA said the products were being sold in the UK under a range of names: “Sildenafil-containing medicines.”But its spokesman, Dr Graham Jackson, said: “This is a matter of trust and not necessarily the safety of the MHRA.
“It is important to remember that the medicines in our range are medicines that are effective.”
